#11- Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

This book was… entirely too long. I enjoyed it in the beginning, and then kept trudging through several hundred dreary pages because by the 350 mark I cared about what was happening to the characters. In the end, I finished the book but wasn’t left with any satisfaction about it. The story is interesting and quite well written, but could have made it’s point easily in half the pages.

Verdict: B-

#12 – Eat, Pray, Love

I really liked this one. Good, interesting, and written with a decent amount of wit… I liked the story, even with its God-centered talk. Elizabeth Gilbert did a wonderful job of discussing God and spirituality without alienating people who believe differently. The book is a wonderful chronicle of her travels as well, and gives a great picture of each place she visits.

Verdict: A-

#13 – Slayers and their Vampires

This one is a non-fiction look at the historical development (through literature, history, and anthropology) of vampire slayers. Of course, this came about because of my general interest in Buffy, but in the end the book was a quick and interesting non-fiction read about literary and historical warriors against the undead.

Verdict: B+

#14 – The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

I know some friends who are going to be terribly disappointed in this review, as they find Murakami to be an absolute literary genius…..

Truth? I couldn’t even get through this book. It is beautifully descriptive, but heavily written and full of completely nonsensical twists and turns. The story is utterly strange without referencing anything in terms of the supernatural, which it seems to suggest. Just… odd. It felt artificial to me.

Verdict: C-

Let me know how you like Water for Elephants, that’s definitely in my top 5 to read next. I just finished “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Pincoult & “The Myth of You and Me” by Leah Stewart – both equally amazing.

Oh and congrats on your new arrival!!!!
