18 Jan

It’s almost midnight and I am getting ready to go to sleep, but I wanted to leave you guys with a quick update before tomorrow.

Today we marked 24 weeks!  Evi’s heartbeat remains strong and steady, complete with the up and down variations that mean her brain is continuing to grow and mature.  I am not having any contractions so far, and my water remains intact.  The best news is that my cervix has lengthened to just under a centimeter.  It is certainly not as much as I would like, but every tiny bit of cervix remaining gives us a better chance of making it to 28 weeks.  By then, her chances of survival are nearly 100% and her chance of disability (which encompasses everything from thick glasses to cerebral palsy) plummets as well.

I am still at pretty high risk for early delivery, but every day is another 24 hours more for her to grow and develop.  They’ve given me the steroid shots to encourage her lung development, and I am monitored for contractions (along with listening to her heartbeat for a solid half hour three times a day.

The food is decent, the nurses are fantastic, and Aaron spends as much time here as possible, barely squishing his 6’4″ frame onto the couch by my bed.  For now, it’s one day at a time, and today was a good day.

By the way, the hospital firewall won’t let me on to Facebook….

Yay for lengthening cervix. That’s good news. 24 weeks is brilliant too. Now Miss Evi just needs to wait a little longer before putting in her big appearance.

Hope you are all hanging in there. Keep us posted.

Are you at the hospital near me (AA)? If so, do you want me to bring anything by? Snacks, books, magazines, puzzles, whatever. Just say the word and I’ll load you up!
