Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award

17 Mar

In November of 2008 I took part in NaNoWriMo, a writing exercise where you write an entire novel in one month.  I was proud of what I wrote, so in January of 2009 I submitted it to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest.  The grand prize of the contest is $25,000 and a full publishing contract with Penguin.  There are also some smaller first and second prizes that include awards dinners, trips to the West Coast, and other opportunities to mingle with some writers and publishers.  In past years, a lot of second and third prize winners were still published.

This year they received over 5,000 entries.  My novel was picked to be among the top 500 in the quarter final round!  Now here is where I need your help!!!

On April 15th, the publishing partners will choose the top 100 for the semifinal round.  You can help me get into that top 100 but leaving a positive review on my novel!  If you click here, you can visit the Amazon page and download 17 pages of the novel for free!!

It will ask you for a credit card number, but there will be NO CHARGE made.  You can also read the short excerpt below:

Title: The Traveler

Description:
Hidden and alone, Eve has grown used to running away. With a past too dark to remember, she is content to continue running.  All of that changes when she meets Noah. His family takes her in, and she stumbles into a world of magic beyond her comprehension.  Noah and his family prove to be her best protection when her past finally catches up to her.

Pitch: The Traveler tells the story of Eve, a young girl with a tragic past who finds herself caught up in a world of magic and danger. After the mysterious death of her family, Eve sets off on her own, determined to outrun the people responsible for her loss. Finding herself alone, unable to trust anyone, she takes refuge in the woods. When Noah and his brother stumble across her, his patience and kindness are rewarded with her trust. Through her relationship with Noah and her attachment to his family, she finds the strength to fight the battles that arise when her past finally catches up to her.

Set both in the northeastern United States and Rome, Italy, The Traveler draws on the scenery and mood of the author’s home and Mediterranean travel experiences. Eve’s time in Rome highlights the author’s favorite places and sights. Eve, Noah, and the supporting characters are young and relatable, but keep the reader’s interest with their chemistry and supernatural abilities. The author’s writing style creates a comfortable, realistic atmosphere with dialogue written just as it would be spoken. Readers will immediately hear the characters’ voices for themselves.

In a literary climate saturated with vampire novels and ghost stories, The Traveler offers readers a supernatural suspense and romance that departs from the typical traits and plot lines while capitalizing on reader interest in paranormal events. Born from a desire to see more than the popular vampire fiction in the hands of today’s fans of mystical fiction, The Traveler offers a strong story arc and a new take on the current trend toward magic.

I can’t believe I made it this far!  I can’t believe I was chosen in the top 10% of submitted books!!!  Please, if you have any time at all, go and download the pages, read and comment!  Send it to your friends and family.
